Biography

Janet Damita Jo Jackson became the ninth and the youngest child in the famous Jacksons family. She was born and raised in Gary, Indiana. In 1971, the success of Jackson 5, consisting of the girl's elder brothers, made it possible for the family to move to the suburbs of Los Angeles. In spite of Janet's unwilling to copy her brothers and become a singer, her father made her a part of Jackson 5. Some time later, she starred in such sitcoms as Good Times, A New Kind Of Family, Fame, variety-show series The Jacksons and others. Besides, in 1978 the artist made her first record in the line-up of Jackson 5. When she was around fifteen, her father signed a solo contract for her. In 1982, the girl released her debut album Janet Jackson. However, the listeners were not eager to cheer the new star even after her second R&B disc Dream Street of 1984. Soon after the release Janet eloped with her boyfriend, singer James DeBarges, and married him - however, the marriage was annulled soon.

Such life lessons had positive influence on Janet as in 1986 she released the brilliant Control full-length, produced by Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis - this work became her breakthrough. The declaration of self-awareness Control along with What Have You Done For Me Lately, Nasty, When I Think Of You and Let's Wait Awhile - all these songs became the smash hits all over the world. The album of 1989 called Rhythm Nation 1814 with the pop rock anthem Black Cat continued the singer's success and stayed in the charts for no less than three years. In 1991, Janet secretly married dancer Rene Elizondo - their marriage was revealed only in 2000, when Elizondo decided to divorce. The couple officially parted only in 2003. In 1993, Jackson made many appearances. Firstly, she issued the brilliant pop rock album Janet with the sexual hit If. Secondly, the same year she debuted on the wide screen in the film Poetic Justice. Besides, she performed the energetic single Scream in duet with her brother Michel Jackson.

Discs Damita Jo and 20 Y. O. were underappreciated by the public. Nevertheless, Jackson's excellent play in the family drama Why Did I Get Married? made everyone forget about the incident. In the spring of 2008, Janet released her new full-length Discipline, which is a mature work that contains both wonderful dance compositions and slow pop tunes, full of emotions.
