Omega is another example of a watch that puts the watch model number inside of the case. Omega watches do have a serial on the outside of the case however, that will search in Omega’s database and correspond with a model number. This database only dates back to certain period so anything vintage or retro might not search. An authentic Cartier watch can be identified by the logo and printing, the inscription on the movement, the construction of the case, the feel of the winding stem, and the quality of the dial. The overall weight of the watch is also a clue to the authenticity of the watch, as true Cartier watches are quite heavy. In order to authenticate a watch, you must pay close attention to detail. Some of the most important details will only be seen through a magnifying glass. Only a trained professional should be trusted, but there are three steps you can perform to check the authenticity of a Cartier watch.

Three Steps to Authenticating a Cartier Watch

1. The front and the dial: If there are any kind of mishaps in this area, such as: the engraving, the coloring, or the screws that hold the watch together, then you do not have a genuine Cartier.

2. The back: on an authentic Cartier watch, you will find the Cartier engraved, and below that the words: Water Resistant, Swiss Made, and OR 750/Acier. There are three sets of words, written right under each other in a perfect print and engraving. If you find that the words engraved on the back of the watch are not straight, meaning you could not draw a straight line under them, or there is anything other than this exact print on the back, then this watch is not genuine.

3. The movement: You must open the watch to locate the movement. The inside of the watch is very difficult to counterfeit. The movement inside of an authentic watch fits perfectly, and you will find the wires nicely coded, to keep them from eroding. Also, the engraving is perfect.

Where to find a Rolex's serial number?

Every genuine Rolex has a unique serial number. It will be in one of two places, depending when it was made.

• Pre-2005: Between the lugs of the 6 o'clock side
• 2005 onwards: On the inner bezel (dial rehaut)

If your watch was made before 2005, you'll find its serial number engraved on the case between the lugs (the 'horns' that attach to the bracelet) of the 6 o'clock side. You'll need to remove the watch's band to see it. If you're not confident about doing this yourself, take it to a jeweller.

In 2005, Rolex began laser-engraving the serial number on the inner bezel, or dial rehaut, as well as between the lugs of the 6 o'clock side of the case. In 2008, the company switched to only engraving the serial number on the inner bezel, as this is much harder to counterfeit.

The inner bezel is the ring that runs around the inside of the watch's bezel, perpendicular to the face. Rolex watches made from 2005 onwards will have the word 'Rolex' repeated around the inner bezel, with the brand logo at the 12 o'clock position and the serial number at 6 o'clock.

Do fake Rolexes have serial numbers?

If a Rolex doesn't have a serial number, then it isn't genuine.

Serial numbers can be faked, but this is extremely difficult to do well — especially on the inner bezel, where you find the serial number of Rolexes made after 2005. Fraudsters tend to acid-etch the serial number onto the watch rather than engrave it, as engraving is much more difficult. Fake serial numbers often look poorly engraved or very faint.

Some imitations are so well-made it takes an expert eye to tell them apart from the real thing. If you're not sure a Rolex is genuine, take it in to a trusted jeweller and have it appraised.

Locating your Rolex serial number

The serial number of your watch is engraved on the case at the 6 o'clock end between the lugs. You will need to remove the bracelet/strap to see it. The model reference is engraved in the same place at the 12 o'clock end. As of August 2010, serial numbers for new Rolex watches are randomized, making it impossible to use the numbers for dating purposes.
